A Joomla component is destined to be either

• displayed as a pages main content (examples: Joomlaboard forum, Gig Calendar...), or
  
• just as a backend configuration interface for functionality such as SEF Advanced or AkoComments.

Components add lots of different functionality to the Joomla Core. Most are pretty simple to use in just a few steps:

On April 11th 2006, Microsoft provided an update for IE to comply with the ruling in the EOLAs lawsuit.
This update affects all ActiveX controls, the most used one on the Windows platform probably being the Flash Player
(others are for example QuickTime, PDF (Adobe Reader) and Windows Media..).

The change: users must now first click on the object to activate it! 

Fortunately, Macromedia/Adobe have provided a workaround .
The SWF is dynamically called into the inner html of a div by javascript, so not embedded into the html page anymore.
You can download the requiered javascript files from the above URL and then update your site using the explanation provided.

Hard times ahead for site designers once IE 7 is out: new version detection will have to be added, plus Flash Player version, plus javascript workaround, plus plus plus..

Using Flash used to be easy a few years ago..
