How does Joomla manage content (articles / items) ?
Some basic ideas..

Image a train.

You have a locomotive pulling the whole train.
Attached to it, wagons.
In the wagons, the travellers.

I don't remember who originated this analogy, but ever since I first read this, I have had it in my mind...

Joomla is just the same.

You have sections; these are the locomotives and don't hold travelers.
You have categories; these are the wagons, and they contain the travelers.
You've got the content items, these are the travelers !

A locomotice usually has a number (a section has a description);
a wagon usually also (category description),
and each traveler is a unique person and can only be in any one wagon at a time
(a content item belongs to one and only one category, thus section)!

Joomla itself would be the railroad system: multiple trains rolling along in harmony / multiple sections/categories/items coexisting.

The default install with content already holds a few "trains", but each of the train elements can be changed:

  • you can rename sections, update their description, add an image;
  • same goes for categories, which you can also "attach" (move) to another section;
  • and "travelers" can move between "wagons" (move items between categories), be renamed, their actual content can be rewriten...

I hope this "picture" helps you understand Joomla a bit better?

Maybe you're hungry? Try this instead then: section = table, category = plate, content = food in the plate!

Bon Appétit! ;)

dear eyezberg, creating my first site, I've created sections, categoires, extended the main menu to my needs, uploaded content
and still i can't figure out the reality of joining it all together to formulate a web site and I've spent a week reading everything i can get my hands on. I've seen some killer JM sites but the workings of the admin of Joomla escapes me . . i pray for the day when i can operate it. with your theory above is enough to get things rolling? I wish it was that easy . . . pour moi . . . take care,
nice site
